T& F March 28

Parents;
Welcome to GRCHS track & field for 2021. It’s been a busy week for team & coaches. Although we may get some more winter sport kids, our roster is starting to look settled. All of our practices are now mandatory, meaning kids must be at practice unless sick or have communicated with their event coach ahead of time. We meet at 3:05 at the track and spend our first 10 minutes in devotions before moving to our warm up and running portion of practice. At 4:15 we switch to field event practice and/or relay hand offs. We have asked each sprinter to also select a field event to help the team. Please encourage your child in this as some resist at first only to find out they eventually love their field event and also help the team.
Our first meet of the season is this Tuesday at home against South Christian. Field events begin at 4:00 with running at 4:45. Because field events all start at 4:00, here is the rotation on who goes first. This season girls go first in the shot put and high jump, while boys go first in the disc and pole vault. The long jump has an open pit, meaning both boys and girls can start together and simply have 75 minutes to complete their jumps. For all running events, girls go first this season. Here is the order of running events for all regular meets:
4×800 relay
100/110 high hurdles
100 meter dash
4×200 relay
1600 meter run
4×100 meter relay
400 meter dash
300 meter low hurdles
800 meter run
200 meter dash
3200 meter run
4×400 meter relay
At this time, we are allowed 20% attendance for outdoor venues. Please know this may change, but I’m confident each athlete can have 2 fans per person. Should anything change, we will let you know. When attending meets, please wear a mask. Athletes must also wear a mask except when warming up or competing. Coaches are required to wear a mask at all times during the meet.
As you know, spring break begins on Friday. While we will have no mandatory organized practices, your son or daughter should do their best to continue to train throughout the break. It is very important as we have meets on Thursday and Saturday after break.
Finally, I’d like to introduce our coaching staff:
Throws are coached by Tim Stapert & Ben Talsma
Long jump is coached by Phil Merrell (hurdles coach too)
Pole Vault is coached by Zander Armstrong
High jump is coached by Doug Jager ( head coach too)
Sprints are coached by Alex Smith, Sara Knoester, and Kate Clark
Middle distance and distance are coached by Dan Hoekstra, Tricia Nelson, and Kathryn Deacon
We are very excited to have a real meet Tuesday, and look forward to meeting you!  Doug
