Fw: Running for Clean Water

I am Dan Hoekstra and I am blessed to be one of the cross country coaches (and teachers) at Grand Rapids Christian High. This is my 9th season at GRCHS and my 14 year coach overall. If I haven’t met you, please introduce yourself the next time we cross paths at a meet. I would love to meet you! As some of you know, I am running the Grand Rapids Half Marathon (13.1 miles) on October 18. The training has been going well and I’m excited to race in less than three weeks! While I still love to run and be competitive, my focus has changed a bit over the past few years (probably due to getting older) and I have felt the desire to use my running to help others. As a result, I am partnering with World Vision for this race so that I can raise money to provide clean water for communities in Africa. According to World Vision “Nearly 1,000 children under age 5 die every day from diarrhea caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation, and improper hygiene. We believe the global water and sanitation crisis can be solved within our lifetimes, and we’re focused on providing clean water and sanitation to every man, woman, and child in every community we work in, including the most vulnerable populations in the hardest-to-reach places. World Vision is the leading nongovernmental (NGO) provider of clean water. We reach one new person with clean water every 30 seconds. We work alongside communities so that they take ownership in maintenance and repair of water points. This results in water that continues to flow long after our work concludes.” (See more at: http://www.worldvision.org/our-impact/clean-water#sthash.GmE5QSdG.dpuf). I am writing to invite you to partner with me. There are several ways that you can help. – Please consider making a financial donation to World Vision. Every $50 provides clean water for one person. My goal is to get 27 people to sponsor my race with a $50 gift. This is one sponsor for each half-mile plus a last sponsor to bring me home that last 0.1 mile! This goal would provide clean water for 27 people in Africa. If you are interested, please use this link: http://www.teamworldvision.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.participant&participantID=41427. Of course, please do not feel pressured to donate. There are many other ways you can help! – Please pray for me, my wife Erinn (who is running and recently twisted her ankle) and many others who are training hard and trying to raise money. Pray for health, energy, excitement and generosity. – Please consider cheering on Sunday, October 18. Look for the people wearing bright orange shirts and then scream loud! The race begins at 8am. More info here: http://grandrapidsmarathon.com/events/half-marathon/ Thank you for reading this and for considering how you can help provide clean water.
